Purpose: The purpose of reinforcement is to strengthen the hull to accept some serious abuse. This article just identifies supplies for now and will include procedures/pics soon. Recommended for: - Reinforcing the transom is always encouraged as it is prone to cracking around and below the bondrail.
- Reinforcing the sides and the front is highly encouraged for the rider who wants to get inverted but not necessarily for the common Air Gramps
. - Not recommended for a first timer to attempt without guidance.
Supplies: (w/ USComposites part#)
- Biax – 17oz, 45deg (3yds of 38” to be safe), USC# FG-170838
- 2’ x 38” each side of motor compartment
- Two layers 1.5’x38” for transom
- Scraps for under nose lip
- Scraps for reinforcing hood (or use e-glass)
- Scraps for reinforcing foot “smash-pads”
- E-glass cloth – 7.5oz, plain weave (2yds), USC# FG-C0750
- Nice to cover biax in motor compartment with minimal "cleanup"*
- Scraps for reinforcing hood (or use biax)
- Epoxy Kit, USC# EPOX-635314 (med), EPOX-635413 (fast)
- 1gal +/- thin epoxy, MEDIUM for 65deg+ (Summer), MEDIUM or FAST for below 65deg (Winter)
- Resin Pumps, optional, USC# EPX-P31
- Box of 2" and 1" chip brushes, USC# BR-TA20B and BR-TA10B
- 4" Plastic spreaders, maybe three, USC# SQ-04
- 4" fiberglass roller, optional (can be a pain in the azz over curves), USC# FR-1214A
- Cabosil – 2.5qt (mostly just for bondline but also good for gouges in underside of hull), USC# FL-AER025
- Optional - Substitute with fairing filler (comes mixed with cabosil) for easier sanding, USC# SM-FC050
- Optional - Substitute with 2-part urethane foam in bondline for easier sanding, lighter weight, weaker bond at bondline
- Mixing sticks, USC# GLV-TD050
- Mixing cups/buckets
- Tint, optional
- Grinding, sanding supplies
- Cleaning supplies
- Duct tape, masking paper, sharpie markers
- Scissors - I recommend your wife's best kitchen/sewing shears
- Gloves, dust masks, hairnets, coverall clothes
- Acetone – 1gal
*= never tried laying cloth over biax but I probably would if it lays up nice. Would be nice for a single tint layer as well. |
